Keyboard Shortcuts Game: learn them by playing
A fast game for learning the keyboard shortcuts that save you hours — copy and paste, undo, reopening a closed tab, commenting out a line of code. Each round shows a shortcut and times how quickly you hit it, while a live keyboard lights up every key you press.
How to play
- Pick a mode: Sprint shows the keys, Recall only names the action, and Quiz asks you to pick the right combo from four.
- Press the shortcut as fast as you can. Wrong keys light up on the keyboard below, so you can see what your fingers did.
- Ten rounds per run. Your average time is the score.
Controls
- Keyboard & mouse
- Press the real shortcut. On a Mac, ⌘ counts as Ctrl · Esc to pause
- Touchscreen
- Phones get Quiz mode: tap the combo that does the job.
Scoring
Your score is your average time per shortcut in milliseconds, so lower is better. Each wrong key press adds 250 ms to that round, and a wrong quiz answer adds 600 ms — accuracy counts as much as speed.
Tips
- Learn the families: adding Shift often reverses or extends a shortcut, like Ctrl+Z to undo and Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo in many apps.
- Move on to Recall once Sprint feels easy — recognising an action by its name is what you need at work.
- Keep your left hand near Ctrl and Shift; most everyday shortcuts live on the left half of the keyboard.
Questions
Which keyboard shortcuts are worth learning first?
Copy, paste, cut and undo (Ctrl+C, V, X, Z), find (Ctrl+F), new tab (Ctrl+T) and save (Ctrl+S). Those cover most of a working day.
Does it work on a Mac?
Yes. The game accepts ⌘ wherever a shortcut uses Ctrl, so you can practise the Mac versions with the same deck.
Can I play on a phone?
Yes. A touchscreen has no Ctrl key, so phones get Quiz mode, where you pick the right combo from four options.
